Severely multi-disabled area (SMB)
Individualised care, support and participation in working life adapted to the form of the day are an important component of daily structuring.
Area for people with severe multiple disabilities (SMB):
The SMB groups are aimed at employees who have an increased need for support. They are offered a structured daily routine through varied programmes adapted to their daily form. The group members are introduced to working life by means of tasks reduced in line with the employees‘ abilities. The production in the SMB groups is supported by the work area.
Trained therapists, who come to the workshop from external physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy practices, work specifically on improving mobility, motor skills and sensory perception, as well as developing social skills. To promote communication skills (in the context of AAC), special aids are also used to meet the needs and capabilities of people with severe multiple disabilities. The aim is to create a feel-good atmosphere and a confidential relationship between employees and staff. The groups are therefore small in order to give each employee personal space. All group rooms have modern sanitary facilities and care rooms with sufficient opportunities for rest and retreat, as well as a small terrace, and offer a homely atmosphere.

Accompanying offers and therapies
Continuous improvement and promotion of motor, cognitive and other skills is one of the main tasks in the groups. In close cooperation with the educational specialists, therapists from the fields of physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy develop individual programmes for the employees. Some group members are significantly impaired in their ability to perceive and communicate, which is why the specialised staff in the SMB area integrate basal stimulation into the daily routine in a meaningful way. With the help of our educational concept, contact is sought with these group members to enable them to access their environment and thus improve their quality of life. The five senses are addressed in various ways, for example through touch, smells, sounds or light signals. The SMB area of the Gelsenkirchen workshops has special rooms in which personal development can be specifically promoted. There is a therapy room and a Snoezel room.
With this portfolio and the multi-professional team, the SMB area is a strong component of the Gelsenkirchen workshops.

Senior citizens
As part of an all-round pedagogical and nursing care programme, older and ageing employees experience age-appropriate daily structuring and can take advantage of the various work, activity and rest options depending on their daily condition.
The first senior citizens‘ group was set up back in 1999 in response to demographic change and the increasing number of older and ageing employees. We now have three senior citizens‘ groups that comprehensively fulfil the statutory mandate of „participation in working life“ for this group of people. Older employees also have the opportunity to gradually prepare for the third stage of life and thus for life after the workshop.
In our senior groups, we offer a quiet working environment in which production takes a back seat. During the course of the day, additional work is offered for the work area, which can be completed without stress and time pressure. Instead, the focus is on promoting quality of life and social contact. In addition, different part-time models are offered in response to the decreasing capacity and changing needs.
Depending on interests and abilities, practical and everyday tasks are also offered. In addition, there are various errands inside and outside the workshop. The various employment and exercise programmes are also intended to help maintain skills and mobility and prepare people for a meaningful way to spend their twilight years. In 2024, the cross-group programme for mental and physical activation was expanded with the purchase of a chat table and a tabletop.

The senior citizens‘ area is not exclusively aimed at employees aged 50 and over, but also at those who have already aged considerably due to advanced physical and mental decline and may be showing signs of dementia. Some are already unable to cope with the demands of everyday workshop life due to deteriorating eyesight and hearing. Some also have an increased need for rest and increased care requirements.
In order to be able to adequately meet the special needs of older and ageing employees in terms of space, the three adjoining senior citizens‘ groups are designed to be low-stimulus and clearly laid out, as well as being equipped with their own kitchen, a quiet area and adjoining sanitary facilities.

AOG
Participation in work and social life, in connection with integration into everyday life in the workshop, is the focus of close educational support. The fundamental aim of this small group is to promote the individual personality and to consolidate behaviour that is appropriate to the situation and socially acceptable.
In June 2018, the assistance and orientation group was opened as a small group with close support in everyday working life and offers 12 employees with „challenging behaviour“ a workplace.
„Challenging behaviour“ is not just a one-off behaviour, but rather frequently recurring behaviour that is inappropriate or socially unacceptable. In many cases, this is an expression of excessive demands, inner turmoil or personal distress. In everyday working life, it becomes apparent that the circumstances in a large working group are not conducive to achieving goals. Employees are often insecure and are unable to communicate adequately due to a lack of communication techniques. Employees and those around them are often overwhelmed and therefore quickly reach their limits. The existing potential for conflict can have a negative impact on group activities, which means that prompt escalation prevention is urgently required as part of the educational work.
Everyday working life is characterised by a clearly structured daily routine with consistent rules and procedures, which is intended to provide employees with significant security and orientation.
Under the given framework conditions, work is carried out to promote and stabilise individual personalities, taking individual needs into account. In the course of this, alternative courses of action are developed and work is also carried out on increasing personal frustration tolerance and improving the ability to deal with conflict. In the long term, the aim is to improve community skills and, if necessary, to enable individual employees to be integrated or reintegrated into one of the regular or large working groups.
